Our Transition to Kindergarten Initiative has had a busy few months! Staff, Transition Teams and volunteers have been working hard to make sure children in Durham are ready for school. In the last 3 months, we have hosted a total of 15 Transition Team events at 8 Durham Public Schools elementary schools. This is in addition to the County-wide Kindergarten Registration Week and Celebration, which reached rising kindergartners throughout all of Durham.
Across all of our Transition Team schools, a total of 143, (almost 20% of the estimated class from all 8 schools) children and families have attended at least one transition event so far. We have assembled 2,382 Blast Off to Kindergarten Kits to be distributed before the first day of kindergarten in August. Best of all, 100% of families surveyed at events said that they felt more confident about ways to prepare their child for kindergarten.
And we’re not done yet!
In July and August, we’ll be hosting Popsicles on the Playground events at all of our Transition Team schools. Children will be able to enjoy frozen treats while playing with their future classmates, and parents will meet other families with rising kindergartners and to receive information and resources. For a full list of these upcoming events, and to sign up to volunteer, please click here.
Then on the first day of school, we’ll be hosting Kick Off to Kindergarten events to cheer on new students and parents as they arrive for their first day of school. It’s sure to be a fun-filled, exciting morning for everyone! If you know of a group of volunteers interested in being a “cheering squad” at one of our schools, please click here to let us know.
School readiness is everybody’s business. Thanks for supporting the Transition to Kindergarten Initiative and helping children in Durham get ready for school!
