National Family Literacy Day
Posted on 10.29.2021, Friday

In 1994 the 103rd Congress designated November 1st as National Family Literacy Day! Durham’s Partnership for Children is an advocate for literacy leading success within early education. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is an Initiatives we promote to all of the families we encounter within Durham County. The DPIL sends 1 free book a month to children who are between the ages 0-5 living in Durham County.  Reading and literacy makes a huge impact in setting the precedence for your child’s educational journey! We encourage you to use this day to kick off healthy literacy habits with your child if you have not done so already. Setting aside time to read to your child, and participate in literacy games like a spelling bee can positively reinforce what education means to your little genius. National Family Literacy Day also shares space with National Favorite Author Day. By keeping with the literacy theme, this gives you an opportunity to discover with your child what authors write about content that captures their interest. “My child is too young to know what I’m reading or to have a favorite author!”, if you are reading to an infant or toddler and they seem uninterested their consciousness will still retain information. Reading will not only increase your child’s attention span it will strengthen yours as well! Reading is not only fundamental, it’s foundational! As a parent showing your children how literacy can be fun and engaging will positively impact how your child views literacy. The earlier you begin reading to your child the more likely they are to grow to enjoy literacy as they matriculate through their educational life. To help Durham’s Partnership for Children promote literacy in Durham County consider donating books at Barnes and Noble Southpoint starting November 1st! This is our 16th consecutive year partnering with Barnes and Noble for our Annual Holiday Book Drive to improve literacy in our community!
