Looking for a meaningful way to celebrate MLK Day with your child? Here are two great events happening in Durham on Monday, January 16th!

8008c6f6-74a0-4625-9119-0c983a22fe86Inspired by Dr. King’s vision of a world in which every child has the chance to realize his or her full potential, Book Harvest marks MLK Day with the Dream Big Book Drive, an annual community-wide celebration of diversity, literacy, and book ownership for all children. The event takes place on Monday from 1-4 pm at Durham Central Park (501 Foster Street).

There are tons of ways ways to participate: donate your new or gently used children’s books, run a book drive and bring the books you collect, become a sponsor, volunteer, or just come for the fun! There will be live music, food trucks, a performance by the Bouncing Bulldogs, a table for activities with The Scrap Exchange, and more. Emcee Tisha Powell from WTVD will be kicking off the event at 1:00. Click here for all of the details, and help share the joy of reading with more children in Durham!

Before you head over to the Dream Big Book Drive, be sure to check out MomsRising’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Party that morning! This free family-friendly event will take place from 10:30 am – 1:00 pm at the Center Court at Northgate Mall (1058 West Club Boulevard).

imageThe festivities will feature English/Spanish story times, songs, crafts, activities, performances, and birthday cake as people celebrate Dr. King’s life and legacy in a way that children can understand. This year’s celebration will focus locally on Durham and its famed Black Wall Street. Children will have a chance to learn the history of local businesses and find out how to make a difference today.

In continuing Dr. King’s commitment to service, participants are asked to donate nonperishable food (especially peanut butter, canned meat, cereal and corn), gently used children’s winter clothing and coats, or new underwear/ socks for local families in need served by Urban Ministries of Durham. Voter registration and information will also be available. Please click here for all of the event details, and contact Beth@momsrising.org for information about how to volunteer and get more involved with the event.

Come celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King’s vision by helping all children in Durham develop a love of reading, service, and community!
