Let’s talk about families and young children in Sunday’s debate
Posted on 10.07.2016, Friday

Do you want to hear about child care, paid family leave, and strategies to lift children out of poverty in this Sunday’s Presidential debate? You can make it happen! Vote for a question and help get the moderator to ask the candidates how they will support families with young children.

Supporting working families is not just about jobs. In the U.S., only 11% of workers are covered by formal paid leave policies, and affordable high-quality child care is out of reach for many of the 62% of working mothers with infants. And as we reported recently, the percentage of young children living in poverty in our country is still unacceptably high, coming in at a staggering 21.2%.

We want to know how the candidates plan to support families in getting their children off to a great start in life, because that’s when our nation prospers most. For this Sunday’s debate, the Commission on Presidential Debates and moderators from ABC and CNN have agreed to consider the most popular questions from this website. Please vote for the following questions!

Submitted by Lauren H. from Washington: How will you help working families with young kids with quality child care and paid leave? As a mom of a toddler with baby #2 on the way, my concern is ensuring they both get a solid start in life – that my daughter has our support those first critical weeks & that he has quality child care.

Submitted by Patrick from Maryland: How would your budget priorities lift working families with kids from poverty? The Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, early care and public health insurance are federal anti-poverty programs proven to bolster low-income, working families and benefit children long term.
