Join hundreds of volunteers this Saturday and help build a new playground at the Durham Head Start Leathers Meachem Campus! The center is the recipient of a new KaBOOM! playground through a grant funded by Delta Air Lines. KaBOOM! is a national nonprofit dedicated to giving kids the childhood they deserve by bringing play to those who need it most. They need more than 250 volunteers to build this new playground for Durham Head Start children. Volunteers do not have to be skilled, trained or have any special tools – they just have to be enthusiastic, energetic, team players, and willing to work hard and have fun!
Allowing children to explore the natural world provides a multitude of learning opportunities, and an outdoor play space can ignite a child’s learning and imagination in a way that is much different than inside the classroom. Aside from the well-known benefits of outdoor play – such as obesity prevention, learning from sensory experiences, and encouraging physical activity – engaging in meaningful outdoor activities has a deep impact on the healthy development of young children. Some of the most exploratory learning often takes place in nature, and this playground build is a great way to help make that happen for more children in Durham!
