First Pages Launch & Volunteer Day this Sunday
Posted on 07.19.2016, Tuesday

Come help First Pages officially launch into the community! First Pages is a new organization supporting literacy for children under 5 in Durham, and they have provided hundreds of books for children during Kindergarten Registration Week the past two years!

This grassroots effort responds to research that shows the importance of a literacy-rich home environment for children ages 0 to 5. Evidence shows a large gap in vocabulary and pre-literacy skills between kindergartners who were regularly exposed to age-appropriate books and those who were not. First Pages plans to help support children’s literacy by providing bundles of books and literacy information to parents across Durham County, with hopes to expand literacy programming in the future. The nonprofit is actively looking to expand its partnerships to provide more books throughout the community.

First Pages is hosting a Launch Party & Volunteer Day at the Southwest Durham Regional Library (3605 Shannon Road) this Sunday, July 24th at 3 pm. The launch will consist of hands-on volunteer activities including book sorting, stickering, and bundling; a website reveal; and literacy education. Remarks will take place around 4 pm.
