As we lead up to our 30th anniversary on April 16th, we’re excited to launch our #30for30VoicesofImpact campaign, featuring stories from our partners, programs, and staff! Get to know the voices working towards a stronger and more supportive early childhood ecosystem here in Durham.
For children that present challenging behaviors in the classroom, early intervention is essential. At Exchange Family Center, a team of infant and early childhood mental health consultants addresses that need. Through consultations in childcare centers and family childcare homes, the EChO (Early Childhood Outreach) program assists adult caregivers with support and strategies to address their child’s behaviors.
Challenging behaviors in children interfere with being successful in the classroom and can include biting, verbal/physical aggressions, tantrums, developmental concerns, and more. Over the course of 4-6 months, the EChO team conducts a process of assessments and screenings that include parent/teacher interviews and classroom observations, with the ultimate goal of bringing all adult caregivers together to meet the developmental needs of the child.
“Early mental health consultation is really about relational health. We help build connection and cultivate communication with a “village” approach, including parents, teachers, and child care center directors,” said Zulaykha Clemons-Dunn, EChO Program Manager.
After assessments are conducted, an action plan is created with designated strategies. Helpful materials for the classroom like books and visuals may be provided.
When a care strategy includes the voices of all caregivers, the impact can be life-changing. With the bridging of relationships, both teachers and parents feel seen, heard, and appreciated. “I cherish moments when a parent or teacher says, “you helped me so much. I appreciate you being in the space with me,” Zulaykha said.
We’re grateful to our funded partner, Exchange Family Center, for their continuous work to support families and children through mental health outreach. Interested in learning more about the EChO program? Check out: www.exchangefamilycenter.org/parents-caregivers/early-childhood-outreach-program
