On Wednesday, June 11th, a group of volunteers from EMC Corporation participated in a Day of Service with Activate Good and spent the afternoon sprucing up the early learning environments at Little People Day Care and Early Start Academy, two of our Durham Early Head Start centers. Fourteen EMC employees gave their time and energy, and EMC also donated significant funds for supplies for both centers!
Through both intense heat and a lot of rain, these men and women worked tirelessly without complaint, all for the benefit of Durham’s most vulnerable young children enrolled in Durham Early Head Start. At Little People, tasks included distributing mountains of mulch and gravel, planting flowers, and staining outdoor furniture.
Both Dalphia Murphy (Director, Little People) and Kim Adkins (Director, Early Start) were so appreciative for the help, and we know the children are going to love learning and playing in these wonderful outdoor learning environments. At Early Start Academy, volunteers planted flowers and filled in a creek with rocks as a beautiful solution to a drainage issue, and some volunteers took the opportunity to visit with the children and read to a few classrooms.

EMC has 60,000 employees worldwide, and four locations in the Triangle. Each employee was recently awarded 24 hours of community service time, and they planned this Day of Service at four different locations, including ours, with Activate Good’s coordination.
Activate Good works as a “force multiplier” for local causes and nonprofits with volunteer needs. Through outreach efforts and an extensive online volunteer community, they help recruit and connect individuals, groups and companies to fulfill volunteer needs.
We are thrilled to have been chosen as one of the recipients of EMC’s generosity and look forward to working with both EMC and Activate Good on more projects in the future!
