November is a special month that brings with it the promise of crisp autumn air, falling leaves, and the warmth of family gatherings around Thanksgiving tables. But it’s not just about turkey and pumpkin pie – it’s also a time to celebrate Family Engagement Month, a time to highlight the crucial role that families play in education. At Durham’s Partnership for Children, we are dedicated to promoting family engagement throughout the year, and in November, we’re excited to focus on the significance of family-school partnerships. 

When we talk about family engagement in education, we often think of parent-teacher conferences and homework help, but it goes beyond that. Family engagement encompasses a wide range of activities and interactions that can occur within and around the school setting. These activities can be initiated by the school itself, teachers, parents, or even students, and they can happen during the school day, after school, or on weekends. The goal is to provide students with a well-rounded education, help them develop skills and interests beyond the classroom, and strengthen the connections between families and schools. 

Here are some compelling reasons why various high-impact family engagement activities are vital for schools:
